Drosophila melanogaster, 2.5 mm, grown from primitives — and inside its head the real thing: 24,000 neurons from the FlyWire map, each at its own coordinate, lit when it fires. The wings beat with the descending neurons that would drive them; the eyes burn with the photoreceptors' own traffic, and the animal glows against the black.
